I agree that whoever did this was deranged, but we don't know for sure what the prison have concluded about Jeremy's mental state.  We have the Campaign Team to rely on for that information, and they in turn essentially rely on Jeremy's word.  Mentally-ill people convicted of offences can be kept for many years in prisons rather than detained in secure psychiatric hospitals, even when they are known to be mentally-ill.  If Jeremy is innocent (and maybe even if he isn't), his mental state must have been affected detrimentally by long-term incarceration.  On the other hand, Jeremy was recommended for category 'B' status quite early in his prison term and not considered a risk.  I would also expect that if something was seriously wrong with Jeremy mentally, it would have leaked and be all over the papers.
